Crossing Borders: Sharing Songs
Our summer was certainly busy! In August Flotsam Sessions spent a magical week in Oostende, Belgium with our European sister organisations, Klein Verhaal (BE), Orchestre Partout (NE) and Muziek Mozaiek (BE). The residency, 'Crossing Borders: Sharing Songs', was ten days of exchanging songs, cultures, games, silliness, tunes, memories and making new music. The residency culminated in two wonderful concerts - one even performed in the pouring rain!
35 musicians • 30 nationalities • 4 organisations • 14 new music pieces
Crossing Borders: Sharing Songs has been an incredible journey over the last two years, with this unforgettable residency finale last week. An Erasmus+ funded project with @klein_verhaal @orchestrepartout @muziekmozaiek.folk.jazz

Flotsam Sessions at Jamboree
Our favourite way to spend a Saturday afternoon! Playing music, dancing and laughing with new and old friends. Flotsam Sessions at the Jamboree happens every 3rd Saturday of the month 1 - 5 pm. Bringing together Londoners from diverse backgrounds, to jam, and learn a song together in a free workshop, always with a different guest musician, invited to share a song from their tradition. In 2023, we’ve already had the joy to learn a Kurdish song with Newroz Oremari, and a Gaelic folk song with Lewis Kane (a.k.a STAGG), and more is to come!
Our Jamboree Sessions always start with an open song workshop, followed by an acoustic jam session, welcoming any instruments, levels of musicianship, cultures, voices, rhythms and dances. With roots, folk and trad music from all corners of the world, heart and mind, Flotsam Sessions is an open space to share, express, connect and collaborate through music, and is open and welcome to all!

30 Incredible Musicians
For six intense and wonderful days, Flotsam Sessions brought together 30 outstanding musicians, Londoners with roots in 16 countries (and 5 continents!) from across the globe. They shared, learnt, arranged and rehearsed songs together, with a crazy range of instruments, voices and musical backgrounds. They performed two incredible gigs, in Catford’s Ninth Life, and a sold out show at The Jago in Dalston, with special guests The Scorpios. And it was fantastic!

We are super excited to collaborate with the incredible singer and songwriter Suna Alan. Read more about her life below, and check out her work here: www.sunaalan.net & https://www.youtube.com/sunaalan12
‘Suna Alan is a Kurdish/Alevi singer and journalist based in London. She was born in the mountainous province of Çewlik (Bingol), an ancient Kurdish and Armenian province. Her family moved to Smyrna (Izmir) in her early childhood which meant that much of her formative years were spent surrounded by traditional Kurdish dengbêj (*bard) music and Kurdish-Alevi laments within a rich cosmopolitan cultural environment. Although her main focus remains Kurdish folk songs from the four regions of Kurdistan namely Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey, her repertoire also includes Armenian, Greek, Sephardic, Arabic and Turkish songs. She has involved in a variety of causes, including human and women's rights and the environment.’
